Canada and Türkiye’s energy ministers signed a joint statement after meeting in Ankara on 22 October. It outlines areas for cooperation and further discussion; it does not announce a signed LNG purchase, a nuclear construction contract or a funded mining project.

For LNG, the governments agreed to facilitate discussions between Canadian project proponents and potential long-term Turkish off-takers. They also welcomed exploration of civil nuclear cooperation using Canadian technology, and discussed renewables, grid stability, carbon capture and storage, and technical exchange on next-generation geothermal systems, including advanced closed-loop geothermal knowledge-sharing and ways to expand private-sector renewable investment. The statement names no buyers, supply volumes, prices, delivery schedule or selected nuclear design.

On minerals, the agenda spans exploration, drilling, laboratory analysis, resource modelling and reporting standards, along with battery minerals and responsible-mining practices. The ministers also agreed to explore work between the Geological Survey of Canada and Türkiye’s mineral research directorate. The proposed Geological Survey cooperation may cover public geoscience supporting mineral and energy research, geological hazards and related emerging priorities. No company participant, project budget or implementation timetable is stated.

A Natural Resources Canada readout adds that the ministers discussed Canada’s involvement in Türkiye’s New Nuclear Project, drawing on Canada’s stated 50-year nuclear operating record and supply chain. It also records Türkiye’s adoption of the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining standards and expected participation at the next PDAC conference. The signed statement itself remains exploratory on nuclear cooperation, while the readout says the governments intend to intensify discussion through existing bilateral channels. Together, the documents show a government-level agenda that may create commercial opportunities, but leave project selection and execution to later steps.

The joint statement makes the proposed mining collaboration more specific than a general trade commitment: it identifies support for CRIRSCO-aligned resource modelling and reporting, company and industry partnerships, and potential exchange between the two geological survey bodies. It also refers to responsible-mining practice, including adoption of the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining standards. The planned PDAC participation offers an industry forum for continued engagement, but it is not a project commitment. These are policy and institutional workstreams; they do not identify a deposit, exploration licence, mine development or private-sector participant.
