## Key facts

- Revised target: End of June 2027
- Previous target: End of March 2027
- Fibre-related suspension: 11 months, April 2025 to March 2026, according to RFI
- Station underpass distance: Approximately 200 metres; stated opening hours 05:00–24:00

Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) has revised the planned completion of the Viale Principe Amedeo underpass refurbishment in Rimini to the end of June 2027. In an October 23 update, the infrastructure manager said the previous target had been the end of March 2027. It linked the three-month schedule change to underground utility conflicts found when work resumed, some of which it said had not been reported earlier.

The underpass links the city-centre side of Rimini with the seafront side. Work is continuing on the ramps on the sea-facing side, while crews are installing micropiles on the city side to stabilise the excavation before shaping and building a new ramp. RFI said further relocation work has been needed for fibre-optic lines and electrical cables. Remaining work also involves gas pipes, public lighting, water-supply lines and irrigation networks. These interfaces matter because the construction footprint intersects services managed by several network operators, requiring them to be moved or protected before the civil works can proceed.

RFI described utility conflicts as the principal cause of the extended timetable. The company said fibre relocation had suspended work for eleven months, from April 2025 to March 2026. It also said some earlier pauses were agreed to reopen the passage between the coast and centre during events, holidays and the summer season. The site reopened on March 19, 2026, when the final stage was expected to last twelve months, putting completion around March 2027. The new June target updates that baseline; RFI did not provide a revised cost figure in the October notice.

The project is intended to improve pedestrian and cycle access and remove architectural barriers. RFI says the existing ramps will be rebuilt wider and longer, with slopes between 5% and 8%, and lighting will be upgraded. On the city side, the final design calls for a continuous ramp tied to renovated pavements at Piazzale Cesare Battisti and Corso Giovanni XXIII. On the sea side, the new access arrangement is to include stairs at Via Monfalcone and Viale Rodi, plus a ramp for people with disabilities and cyclists walking their bikes.

While the Viale Principe Amedeo passage remains closed, RFI says pedestrians can use an alternative route along Viale Rodi or the central underpass at Rimini station, about 200 metres away. The station route is stated to be open from 05:00 to midnight and passes beneath the rail tracks. That temporary route is relevant to the project's purpose: a separate central station underpass has been extended towards the seafront, but RFI's October notice identifies it as an alternate connection and does not say it replaces the refurbishment being carried out at Principe Amedeo.

The delayed handover illustrates how railway-adjacent civil works can depend on coordination across utility networks as well as the main construction sequence. RFI’s March 2026 notice announced the full closure for the final phase and forecast twelve months of work. Its October update explains that conflicts with fibre, electricity, gas, lighting, water and irrigation services affected the schedule, and sets the current completion estimate at the end of June 2027. RFI did not publish a revised project cost in that update.
