## Key facts

- Substation: Midan 2, Damascus
- Transformer rating: 30 MW
- Voltage ratio: 66/20 kV
- Reason cited: Industrial-user complaints about low voltage; old transformer was aged
- Replacement completed: 25 October 2026

The Syrian Electricity Company completed replacement of a transformer at the Midan 2 substation in Damascus on 25 October, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The new unit is rated at 30 megawatts and 66/20 kilovolts. The utility’s official Telegram channel also reported that technical crews had installed a new 66/20 kV, 30 MW transformer at Midan 2. Both accounts describe a completed replacement intended to improve supply stability; neither reports measured performance after the work.

SANA says Midan 2 supplies several areas of Damascus and the Housh Balas industrial zone. It reports that the old transformer was replaced after industrial users complained of low voltage at their facilities, which the southern transmission branch attributed to the age of the previous unit. The reports do not state the former transformer’s rating, actual loading on the new unit, connected line capacity, installation cost or whether the work required a planned outage. The utility post says the work is intended to increase supply hours for subscribers, but gives no quantified change.

The stated 66/20 kV ratio identifies the voltage levels served by the transformer; the 30 MW rating is the capacity reported in the announcement. These figures do not show how much demand the substation can serve in practice. Actual service depends on the wider network and loading, but the sources provide no post-replacement voltage measurements, outage data or change in hours of supply. The utility describes the work as supporting reliability, not as a quantified increase in generation or network capacity.

SANA separately notes that the company performed maintenance at Damascus’s Kafr Souseh substation in September to support network stability and reduce emergency faults. That was a different intervention and is not part of the Midan 2 replacement. Neither report states a wider transformer-replacement budget, procurement process, manufacturer or delivery schedule for other sites.

The sourced milestone is therefore narrowly defined: one 30 MW transformer was installed at a named substation serving both residential districts and an industrial area, after complaints about low voltage. The utility’s channel and SANA state the intended reliability benefit, but do not show whether that complaint has been resolved. Operating measurements would be needed to assess the result.
