Renewvia Energy: solar and storage delivery grounded in operating experience

By EPC Feed · Published · Updated

Renewvia combines solar development with project delivery and ongoing operations. Its company profile says it designs, installs, owns and operates commercial and community solar systems, and describes turnkey EPC, integrated financing and consulting services. Its international business includes subsidiaries in Kenya and Nigeria, with solar minigrids built and operated for communities outside the reach of conventional utility networks. This background gives Renewvia a useful range of delivery perspectives: it works with both larger clients and local energy users, and has experience where generation, storage, distribution and customer access must be considered together.2

That focus on access is evident in the company’s Distributed Renewable Energy–Agriculture Modalities initiative. Renewvia describes plans for solar mini-grid-powered irrigation systems in Africa, involving Ethiopian public agencies, the World Bank, the European Investment Bank and the African Development Bank’s Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa. This is a distinctive engineering context: irrigation demand can vary by season and time of day, while a mini-grid must balance generation, storage, pump loads and other local users. The project concept connects energy infrastructure with productive use, requiring good load planning and a service model that remains workable after commissioning.3

Renewvia’s Jazeera award in Mogadishu provides a larger grid-connected example. A World Bank contract-award notice names Renewvia Energy Corporation, Asunim Renewable Energy Joint Stock Company and Civil and Electrical Projects Contracting Company Limited as the awarded consortium for a 55 MWp AC photovoltaic plant with 160 MWh of battery storage at BECO’s Jazeera Power Plant. The contract price is USD 45,018,820.23 and the stated duration is 18 months. The award is a substantial solar-plus-storage package, with Renewvia participating in a consortium rather than acting as a standalone contractor.1

The project scope includes design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning. Integrating a 55 MWp PV plant with 160 MWh of storage requires coordinated array layout, inverter and power-conversion systems, battery controls, protection, grid interconnection and performance testing. The battery duration is not specified in the notice, so the energy figure alone does not establish operating hours or dispatch strategy. Even so, the scope clearly places the work beyond simple module installation: the contractor group must deliver an integrated plant capable of being tested and handed over as part of BECO’s power infrastructure.1

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources’ 2025 environmental and social impact assessment adds design context. It describes a 25-year solar plant operating horizon and identifies battery-system replacement planning, including procuring and installing replacement batteries, recycling expired units and coordinating replacement with routine maintenance to reduce downtime. The report’s feasibility recommendations describe PV modules, inverter transformers, bidirectional battery power-conditioning units, battery modules and step-up transformers. These are owner-side planning details that highlight lifecycle issues for the winning consortium: battery replacement, materials handling, maintenance windows and future technology compatibility must be designed into operations.4

Renewvia’s published operating background is relevant to that lifecycle dimension. Its homepage describes commercial EPC and back-end operations and maintenance services, while its international profile says the company builds, installs and operates standalone and hybrid solar photovoltaic and battery plants that can accommodate additional wind or other power sources. Minigrid work differs from a 55 MW grid-connected project in size and grid context, but the underlying disciplines overlap: managing variable renewable generation, storage, control systems and service continuity. Renewvia can bring an operating-asset perspective to a project where commissioning is only the beginning of the owner’s lifecycle responsibilities.23

The company’s impact page describes the DREAM initiative as aiming to provide farmers with reliable and affordable irrigation and lists development-bank and government partners. This supports a positive reading of Renewvia’s project development orientation: its portfolio connects equipment and construction decisions to the service model and end users. For a utility-scale PV-plus-storage facility, that mindset can help teams think beyond installed megawatts toward availability, dispatch, maintenance and integration with the off-taker’s system. The public sources do not divide the Jazeera scope among consortium members, so Renewvia’s individual package responsibilities should be confirmed through contract documentation.31

Renewvia is a strong candidate for solar and storage programs that benefit from a blend of EPC execution and operating-asset knowledge. Its international minigrid experience, agricultural energy access work and role in the Jazeera consortium demonstrate exposure to distinct system sizes and delivery settings. The Jazeera award is especially relevant because it covers both photovoltaic generation and substantial battery storage under one integrated procurement. The positive assessment rests on this combination of project development, construction and O&M capability; a prospective owner should map the proposed workshare, controls architecture, battery supplier interfaces and long-term service plan to its technical specification.2314

For EPC evaluation, Renewvia’s most useful discussion areas include grid studies, PV and battery integration, dispatch logic, plant controls, protection coordination, commissioning tests and battery degradation management. The Somali ESIA’s replacement-planning provisions offer a reminder that storage design must account for mid-life service requirements as well as initial acceptance. Renewvia’s profile suggests that it can bring an asset-operation lens to those discussions. Combined with experienced consortium partners, this can support an integrated delivery approach for solar-plus-storage infrastructure that is designed around the needs of the host utility and the communities it serves.214
