Técnicas Reunidas: engineering across gas compression, pipelines and execution management
By EPC Feed · Published · Updated
Técnicas Reunidas’ engineering portfolio is notable for its combination of process facilities and the infrastructure that moves gas and liquids between them. A current example is the Phase 2 expansion of Coastal GasLink in British Columbia. LNG Canada awarded TR Canada E&C engineering, procurement and construction management services after reaching final investment decision for Phase 2. The pipeline project includes five additional compressor stations and modifications to existing and planned facilities along the route. Técnicas Reunidas’ scope comprises detailed engineering, procurement and construction management, with an expected execution period exceeding four years and a contract value above €200 million. The integrated execution model gives LNG Canada the construction leadership role, TR the EPCM services, and Coastal GasLink continued ownership, operation and permitting responsibility.6
This scope puts detailed engineering in direct conversation with field construction and operating infrastructure. Compressor stations are distributed assets; their design must address process equipment, power, controls, pipeline tie-ins, access and permitting at multiple locations. Modifying both existing and planned facilities further increases the need to coordinate design bases and construction sequencing. The release notes that Técnicas Reunidas had already provided consulting and engineering services from early project stages through FEED. The Phase 2 award therefore extends its role from front-end work into procurement and construction management. That continuity can help preserve design intent, although the source does not disclose engineering deliverables, station capacities or the precise schedule for each site.6
A 2024 award for Saudi Arabia’s Jafurah III demonstrates the company’s process-plant expertise at a much larger facility scale. The directors’ report says Saudi Aramco awarded a joint venture of Técnicas Reunidas (60%) and Sinopec (40%) the development of three gas compression plants. The scope also includes a 230-kilovolt electrical connection in the gas plant substation area and an upgrade to a water pump system. The total project value is estimated at approximately US$2.24 billion, with 60% corresponding to Técnicas Reunidas. The report expected a roughly 44-month execution period and says the work would involve more than 400 engineers, many specializing in chemical processes.7
Jafurah illustrates why process engineering cannot be separated from utilities and site infrastructure. Compression trains are central to gas handling, but electrical supply and water systems are also part of the project scope. The project demonstrates a joint-venture model in which technical execution is shared with a major engineering partner, while Técnicas Reunidas holds a stated majority share. In this review, the contract value is carefully distinguished: US$2.24 billion is the total project estimate, not solely the company’s share; the source says 60% corresponds to Técnicas Reunidas. The source also reports anticipated schedule and engineering staffing rather than a final completion result.7
The company’s project overview lists a long record in industrial plant design and construction, including the BAPCO refinery modernization in Bahrain, Haradh gas compression in Saudi Arabia, and major greenfield refineries at Duqm, Al Zour and Talara. It reports more than 1,000 industrial plants in over 50 countries across more than 60 years of history. This is company-published portfolio context. The assessment does not treat age or number of projects as proof of quality; instead, the list helps locate the newer Coastal GasLink and Jafurah assignments within an established pattern of process, refining and gas infrastructure work.8
The positive engineering case is based on role progression and interface range: early consulting and FEED, then detailed design, procurement and construction management on a major gas pipeline expansion; and joint-venture delivery of compression plants integrated with high-voltage power and water-system upgrades. Técnicas Reunidas is not the pipeline owner at Coastal GasLink, nor the sole contractor on Jafurah. Those distinctions clarify rather than weaken the record. Its strongest documented value lies in engineering and managing complex process and midstream scopes where equipment, utility systems, existing assets and construction execution must be coordinated over multiple years. This distinction between execution management and asset ownership is especially relevant on large pipeline projects, where the owner retains permit and operating accountability while the EPCM contractor supports detailed design and delivery. It also makes the announced multi-year period a substantial continuing role, although completion and performance remain future results.678
