Anglo American selects Fluor for Woodsmith feasibility services

The North Yorkshire polyhalite development links deep mine shafts with a 37-kilometre underground conveyor route to Teesside.

Anglo American has selected Fluor to provide feasibility study services for the Woodsmith mining project in North Yorkshire, England. Fluor announced the assignment on 7 May 2026 and said its undisclosed value would be recognised in the second quarter. The award concerns study services within an existing development programme. It should not be recast as a newly announced turnkey contract to construct the complete mine and every associated processing or transport facility.

The release describes deep shafts and a 37-kilometre underground conveyor tunnel connecting the mine with Anglo American's materials-handling facility in Teesside. The intended product is polyhalite fertiliser, with expected production of 13 million tonnes annually once the mine is fully operational. That figure is a future operating capacity, rather than current output or the size of Fluor's services contract.

At the time of the announcement, Fluor reported that tunnelling and shaft sinking were underway. This is a dated description of site activity. It does not establish that those works have since reached final completion or that the feasibility appointment itself authorises every subsequent execution package. The release provides neither a commercial start-up date nor a detailed allocation of all remaining construction responsibilities.

EPC Feed sees the mine-to-handling connection as the useful engineering context for the study. Shafts, underground transport and the receiving facility form a linked production chain, so decisions about one part need to be considered alongside the others. The disclosed route and intended output describe that relationship, but do not reveal the complete study scope or justify assuming a particular revised layout, cost estimate or delivery schedule.

For project observers, the appointment is best followed as a defined engineering-services milestone alongside separately reported construction progress. Later disclosures about study completion, approved investment and execution arrangements would show how the work informs delivery. Preserving these stages makes the update more useful than treating all activity as a single completion claim. The present evidence confirms Fluor's selection and the project's stated infrastructure concept, while operating performance and full project readiness remain matters for subsequent reporting.
