Webuild announced an €803 million contract for the central section of the Genoa Undersea Road Tunnel on 30 July 2026. Autostrade per l'Italia awarded the package, known as Lot B. Webuild will execute 90% of the work and its subsidiary SELI Overseas the remaining 10%. The contract concerns the technically demanding underground central section, rather than an assertion that the entire tunnel and all associated city works are already complete.
The planned route links San Benigno in western Genoa with Viale Brigate Partigiane in the Foce district. Webuild describes an overall route of approximately 4.2 kilometres, including a 3.4-kilometre tunnelled section with two separate parallel tubes, one for each direction of traffic. Excavation across the tubes totals approximately seven kilometres. These different length measures describe the route and the combined excavation; they should not be treated as contradictory specifications for one tube.
A tunnel-boring machine with a diameter of nearly 16 metres is planned for the excavation. Beneath the port basin, the route reaches a depth of more than 40 metres before rising under the Carignano district. The company highlighted construction below the seabed, geological complexity and the need to work within an active city and port. Those interfaces are central to the delivery challenge identified in the announcement and distinguish the package from an open-country road project.
The intended transport function is to separate city traffic from port and logistics movements that currently use overlapping routes. Webuild links this separation with expected reductions in congestion, noise and emissions. Those are anticipated benefits of the completed scheme, not measured effects already achieved by the July contract award. The project also includes landscape improvements at the tunnel entrances and development of Lanterna Park, partly using excavated material to reduce construction transport.
The company said the scheme could support more than 700 direct and indirect jobs. It places the award alongside its involvement in Genoa's new breakwater and the Terzo Valico–Genoa Junction railway works. Together, those projects address different parts of the port's road, rail and marine connections. The new award specifically adds a major underground road package to that infrastructure programme, with construction and urban interfaces that will need to be managed throughout execution.
