Ren-Gas awards conditional carbon-capture EPF contract for Tampere e-methane project

Saipem's Bluenzyme 200 package will support a Finnish synthetic-fuel project, with contract effectiveness dependent on Ren-Gas taking its final investment decision.

Ren-Gas has awarded Saipem an engineering, procurement and fabrication contract for a carbon-capture unit at its Tampere Power-to-Gas project in Finland. Announced on 16 September 2026, the award covers Saipem's Bluenzyme 200 solution, based on its proprietary CO2 Solutions technology. The announcement contains a material condition: the contract becomes effective subject to Ren-Gas taking its final investment decision. An announced award therefore does not by itself establish that the full delivery programme has become unconditional.

Saipem describes the package as the first full-scale unit using the industrialised Bluenzyme 200 solution. Its responsibilities include engineering, procurement and fabrication, together with advisory services during installation, commissioning, start-up and performance testing. Those advisory activities are specifically identified in the release. They should not be expanded into an assertion that Saipem holds an entire plant-wide construction contract or responsibility for every installation activity at the Tampere site.

The capture unit is intended to be integrated into an e-methane facility expected to produce approximately 200 GWh of renewable synthetic fuel annually. Ren-Gas plans for the fuel to reach heavy road transport in Germany through existing gas infrastructure. The 200 GWh figure describes expected fuel energy production; it is not a carbon-capture tonnage, a guaranteed operating result or a capacity derived from the number in the Bluenzyme product name.

EPC Feed sees the important engineering issue as integration between the capture package and the wider fuel-production system. Equipment procurement and fabrication can define a substantial delivery scope, while commissioning and performance testing determine how that package is demonstrated in its intended setting. The announcement identifies these stages without publishing detailed acceptance criteria, a capture rate or a construction timetable for the complete development.

The award follows the earlier selection of Saipem's technology in December 2024. Its present significance is the move from technology selection towards a defined delivery package, with investment approval still governing effectiveness. Future reporting should distinguish that financial decision from equipment fabrication, installation and commercial operation. Confirmation of those separate milestones would provide a more reliable picture of progress than treating the contract announcement as evidence that synthetic fuel is already being produced in Tampere.
