Technip Energies becomes worldwide licensor of SABIC's CTR LDPE technology

The exclusive collaboration builds on the engineering company's involvement with the polyethylene process since 1996.

Technip Energies and SABIC entered into an exclusive licensing collaboration for SABIC's Clean Tubular Reactor technology for low-density polyethylene, the companies announced through a Technip Energies release dated 21 September 2026. Under the agreement, Technip Energies will act as worldwide licensor of the CTR process. The event concerns the commercial licensing framework for an established polymer technology, rather than the announcement of one named polyethylene plant entering production.

The agreement extends a relationship that Technip Energies says has included support for CTR technology since 1996. Its work has covered basic design, engineering, construction and start-up activities. That history is relevant because the new licensing role combines process know-how with experience of implementing the technology in industrial facilities. The release presents the arrangement as a continuation and expansion of an existing technical relationship, not as the first contact between the two companies.

SABIC contributes the LDPE process technology, while Technip Energies brings polyolefins engineering and execution capabilities. The company also points to its experience with equipment design and fabrication for high-pressure LDPE plants. In practical project terms, the announcement links the rights to offer the process with the capabilities required to develop its engineering and equipment requirements. It does not say that a licensing agreement alone replaces the detailed design and delivery work required for each future plant.

Technip Energies frames the collaboration as a way to support wider deployment of the process and help producers scale LDPE production. These are the commercial and technical objectives described by the company. The release does not identify a new customer, specify a plant capacity or publish a contract price for a particular production unit. Consequently, the worldwide licensing role should not be recorded as a quantified new manufacturing-capacity addition or a project construction award.

For petrochemical project monitoring, the announcement establishes who will offer the technology to prospective users and how that role relates to a longstanding engineering collaboration. A later plant-specific licence, engineering contract or construction decision would be a separate event with its own location, capacity and schedule. The September agreement instead changes the commercial route through which the existing CTR technology is made available, while preserving the distinction between process licensing, equipment engineering and the eventual execution of individual high-pressure polyethylene projects.
